New Traditions to Start with Your Family this Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is the perfect time to embrace fresh traditions that add personal meaning to the holiday. One idea is to create a “Thankfulness Jar,” where family members write down things they’re grateful for in the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving. During dinner, everyone can pull out and read a few notes, which encourages reflection and can spark heartwarming conversations.

Another way to celebrate is by hosting a “Friendsgiving” gathering, where friends who may not have family nearby come together for a casual meal. This new twist on Thanksgiving fosters a sense of community and allows for more diverse dishes and customs at the table.

For those wanting a more active tradition, consider organizing a Thanksgiving morning walk or “Turkey Trot” in your neighborhood. This allows everyone to enjoy nature and get some exercise before a big meal, which is especially fun if kids and pets join in. Another idea is to start a family recipe swap: every year, each person brings a recipe they love, and you can create a family cookbook over time.

Finally, you might want to establish a “Day of Service,” where you volunteer at a local shelter or food bank as a family before or after the meal, making gratitude more tangible by giving back to those in need. Adding new traditions is a simple way to bring creativity, inclusiveness, and deeper meaning to Thanksgiving, creating memories that can be carried on for years to come!
